Schlacht von Saipan Schlachtordnung - Battle of Saipan order of battle
Am 15. Juni 1944 landeten Streitkräfte der United States Marine and Army an der Südwestküste der Insel Saipan in der zentralen Marianenkette . Die Invasion von Saipan war Teil der Operation Forager, einem Versuch, die gesamte Marianenkette vom Kaiserreich Japan zurückzuerobern .
Die Insel war japanischer Besitz, seit sie im Ersten Weltkrieg von der kaiserlichen japanischen Armee erobert wurde . Als in den 1930er Jahren ein militärischer Konflikt mit den Vereinigten Staaten immer wahrscheinlicher wurde, unternahm Japan große Anstrengungen, um Saipan zu befestigen. Mitte 1944 waren fast 30.000 Soldaten auf der Insel stationiert, fast das Doppelte der Schätzungen des US-Geheimdienstes.
US-Streitkräfte erklärten Saipan am 9. Juli 1944 für sicher.
